Most of us who practice Vedic astrology would know that there are 7 concrete planets and 2 shadowy planets.
- Concrete planets: Sun, Moon, Mars, Jupiter Saturn, Mercury and Venus
- Shadow planets: Rahu (north node) and Ketu (south node) (magnetic poles of the Moon)
- Note: Rahu and Ketu do not exists in the sky as “concrete” planets
- Natural Benefices: Venus, Jupiter, Mercury (if free from any blemish from malefic planets), Waxing moon
- Natural Malefic – Sun, Mars, Saturn, afflicted mercury and waning moon
- Remember: Rahu and Ketu are not considered as natural malefic. They function in accordance with the sign &house they occupy, planets they associate (conjunctions and aspects)
Behaviour of planets in various houses (12, 2, 8 & 3, 6, 10, 11 & 1, 4, 7 &10th)
- Kendra (Quadrant / Angles) – 1, 4,7,10
- Trines – 1, 5 ,9
- Trishadayadhisha – 3,6,11
- Upchaya – 3,6,10,11
- Parashraya – 12,2,8
Some of you would be thinking as to why 10th house is mentioned twice in the header? 10th house is a Kendra (quadrant) and an Upchaya (growth)
- Rule 1 – Natural benefic when owns Kendra (quadrants) 1, 4, 7&10th house – they shed some of their beneficence. It does not mean that they become malefic. Consider this distinction carefully.
- Rule 2 – Natural malefic when owns Kendra (quadrants) – they shed their maleficence. It does not mean that they become benefic.
- Rule 3 – Natural malefic in Upchaya houses (3, 6, 10, &11) – they help the growth of the house. Planets in upchaya house improves with time.
- Rule 4 – Lords of 12-2-8 are not free in giving results. They give the effects of the planet with whom they associate. If they are not associated with any planets then they give the result of other house in which their 2nd sign has fallen. Thus for Taurus ascendant mercury if not associated with any other planet will primarily give result of Virgo which is 5th house. Jupiter is the lord of 8th and 11th house will predominantly give the result of 11th house if not associated with other planets.( Chapter 36 BPHS)
