Understanding Debilitation

There is no such thing called cancellation of debilitation or neech-bhanga. Now this could really sound like an arrogant statement.The reason I had to state this is because of the fact that Parasara never ever mention cancellation of debilitation in his book Brihat parasara hora shastra.In my humble experience a debilitated planet never ceases to exist like a debilitated planet , however in certain instances they may get a helping hand from other planets that compensates for the loss. But it does not cancel the maleficence or ineffectiveness to provide favorable or auspicious results completely

Let us try and understand the rationale behind these  “exaggerated theorems“.

• Debilitated planet in retrograde motion cancels the debility : This is not a valid statement. What is valid here is the fact that planet in retrogression gains ” Chesta Bala ” and therefore add some strength to the planet in question. Does that mean that its debilitation is negated completely? Answer is no, however it did add to its strength thereby making it slightly better.
• Lord of Debilitated planet in quadrant from ascendant or moon cancels the debility : This is not a valid statement either as lord of the debilitated planet in Kendra will  gain Kendra bala thereby mitigating the maleficence to a certain level and this would depend upon the dignity of the planet in quadrant (Kendra) as well , better the dignity , better the result.
• Lord of the sign where debilitated planet gets exalted is in Kendra (quadrant) from Asc or moon cancels the debility: Not a valid statement , again this would depend upon the dignity of this planet. For example : Mars in debilitation in cancer, lord of the sign where mars get exalted is Saturn ( Mars is exalted in Capricorn), so if Saturn is in say 7th house in Libra from moon ( assuming moon is in Aries) will significantly mitigate the maleficence of mars because of 2 reasons : (a) Saturn is in exaltation and (b) Saturn gains Directional strength (Dig-Bala) in 7th house. Had Saturn  been with moon in Aries this would have been given bad results.
• Debilitated planet is exalted in D-9 ( Navamsa) – This is a pure myth. If we refer to the classical text , we find ” Exaltation and debilation play no role in Saptavargaja Bala” Please note Saptavarga means ” The Seven Vargas” – consider the following :
• Rasi (D-1)
• Navamsa (D-9)
• Hora (D-2)
• Decanate (D-3)
• Saptamamsa (D-7)
• Dvadasamsa (D-12)
• Trimsamsa (D-30)

The planet in any of these 7 vargas get maximum points ( virupas) in mooltrikona (45), so debilitated planet in mooltrikona in D-9 ( Navamsa) will improve the situation or mitigate the maleficence. Remember D-9 is the path , the way we feel about while we are on our journey (life).

Also note : A debilitated planet will give its result as per its dignity during its Mahadasha / Antardasha / Pratyantar dasha ( Major/ Sub/ Sub-Sub) period, the planet that is improving the prospect of debilitated planet will provide the result in its  Mahadasha / Antardasha / Pratyantar dasha ( Major/ Sub/ Sub-Sub) period. So in principle debilitated planet does not cease to act as debilitated and so there should be no question about cancellation.

So the point is that these thumb rules or theorems or short cut do not work – what work is logic  and the real principles of Astrology
